Educational documentary film
Beyond Hip hop is an educational documentary film about finding the real definition of hip hop dance in contrast to street dance. It is an in-depth examination of this unique dance culture, the major dance styles considered integral elements in the umbrella of hiphop, their origin and the confusion surrounding them.
The film contains special and rare interviews from iconic dancers of different era from across the globe which includes Michael Chambers aka Turbo (Breakin 1 & 2), Dante Basco (Take the Lead), Scoo B Jimmy Foster (Something Special), C-mack (In Living Color), Keone and Mari Madrid (World of Dance TV), and many more.

SYNOPSIS: Spanning fifty years and charting a path across three continents, Ricky Carranza’s BEYOND THE BLOCK is a documentary recounting the history of the street dance culture, commonly known as Hiphop dance, in the Philippines, woven through the director’s own journey as a dancer, an educator and a man shaped by his passion and commitment for the art.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ricky Carranza is a versatile street-style dancer, teacher, choreographer, writer and award-winning film director born and grew up in the Philippines. He has taught, choreographed and worked alongside big stars in the Philippine television. His own-founded dance group, The Funk System, won the cult-classic dance contest program in the 80s, a local equivalent of Dance Fever, as Grand Champion in the group category. Funk System is the first Filipino street dance crew to perform in Japan and were featured on local TV.
Ricky has taught and conducted dance workshops across the globe and has trained numerous dancers who are now influential dance community leaders in different countries like Italy, Canada, Finland and more. In 2007, he founded his own dance association in Finland called “Style Dance Industry.” In 2009, Ricky choreographed and performed for the TV commercial “Finland you got talent (Talent Suomi)”. Ricky is the grandson of the Filipino power actress, Herminia “Minyang” Carranza, of Sampaguita pictures in late 50s and early 60s. |
